Hey Luke, we re-designed and revamped our company website, but still no one is coming to our site? Please help.
I get this question (or ones just like it) all the time. My first question back is “Do you use Search Engine Optimization”?

You may have the greatest looking website ever, with all the bells and whistles that a website can have.  Moving images and music playing are great for keeping people on your site, however it does nothing for getting people to your site in the first place. Think about it, how do people find what they are looking for on the web? They use Search Engines to do the work for them. They pull up Google, Yahoo, Bing or any of the other Search Engines, type in a keyword or two and then scan through the results.

With the world moving at such a fast pace it is easy to see why people are relying on the Search Engines to get them to the sites they need . People want to find the site they need at the exact moment they need it. With people needing the information as quick as possible, they are not going to scroll through multiple pages of search results. Most people never get past the first 2 pages of results before they click on a link. The only way you’re going to get your site listed on the top of these Search Engines is by using Search Engine Marketing or Optimization (SEO).

So what exactly is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
SEO can be defined as the activity of optimizing Web pages or whole sites in order to make them more search engine-friendly, thus getting higher positions in search results.

How do you make your site more Search Engine friendly?
Various tactics such as effective use of keywords, Meta tags (a tag that describes some aspect of the contents of a certain Web page) and external links all help with boosting a site’s ranking (how high up a search listing it comes).

How do the Search Engines find sites?
First, search engines crawl the World Wide Web to see what is there. This task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler or a spider. Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they find on their way. Keeping in mind the number of pages on the Web (over 20 billion), it is impossible for a spider to visit a site daily just to see if a new page has appeared or if an existing page has been modified. Sometimes crawlers will not visit your site for a month or two, so during this time your SEO efforts will not be rewarded. After a page is crawled, the next step is to index its content. The indexed page is stored in a giant database, from where it can later be retrieved. Essentially, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keywords. Keeping your site optimized will help make it easier for them to classify your pages correctly and for you – to get higher rankings.

Every industry has certain words or phrases that the majority of people are typing into the Search Engines when looking for information about that industry. I recommend a brainstorming session with marketing and other personnel to develop a list of the keywords.  I would then engage a SEO company to help you use this list to make sure traffic to your site is being maximized!
